{"id":9439,"date":"2023-03-16T12:17:09","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T19:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sonoran.edu\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=9439"},"modified":"2023-05-09T10:26:30","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T17:26:30","slug":"virtual-research-night-spring-2023-innovation-advanced-discoveries-in-botanical-research","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/www.sonoran.edu\/event\/virtual-research-night-spring-2023-innovation-advanced-discoveries-in-botanical-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Research Night, Spring 2023: Innovation &#038; Advanced Discoveries in Botanical Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Virtual Research Night, Spring 2023 &#8211; the premiere event showcasing the latest discoveries in evidence-based botanical medicine.<br \/>\n<em>(Free CME credits available)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/sonoran-edu.zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/WN_1VA1KWXTRmGLacFjaXgOzw\">Click to Register<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Presentation Packet &#8211;<em> Coming Soon<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Presentation Schedule:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Natural and Homeopathic Drug Products &#8211; Industry Applications<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Presented by: Emily Bibak, PhD, MBA<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Director, R&amp;D\/Analytical Technologies &#8211; Glaukos Corporation<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Isolation and identification of potential novel anti-poxvirus compounds from <em>Sarracenia purpurea<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Presented by: <\/em> Bobby Baravati, PhD<br \/>\nAssistant Research Scientist, Ric Scalzo Institute<br \/>\n<strong>Summary:<\/strong> During 2022, an outbreak of monkeypox virus was associated with more than 30,000 infections leading to 28 deaths in the US.\u00a0\u00a0 In addition, smallpox still exists today as a major bioterrorism threat.\u00a0 Our lab has shown that extracts from the carnivorous plant, Sarracenia purpurea, can inhibit replication of these viruses.\u00a0 Currently, our lab is working on isolation of the active antiviral compounds from this plant.\u00a0 These compounds could hopefully be used to treat future outbreaks of these viruses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Potential wound healing\/anti-microbial botanicals for humans, canines and felines<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Presented by: Morgan Detering and Ashley Langland<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Summary:\u00a0<\/strong> Botanicals have long been used for skin care.\u00a0 Our lab is screening various botanical extracts for their ability to improve the rate of wound healing and inhibit the replication of microbial pathogens commonly found in wounds.\u00a0 Not only is this work being done for human cells, but is also being tested in canine and feline cells.\u00a0 This work will hopefully lead to the development of botanical formulations which could improve wound healing in both humans and animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Identification of botanicals with potent anti-herpes virus activity<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Presented by: Heather Dirkmaat<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Summary:<\/strong> It is estimated that over 3.7 billion people under the age of 50 have been infected by the herpes virus, HSV-1.\u00a0 This virus is the common cause of cold sores.\u00a0 Our lab is testing various botanical extracts for their ability to inhibit the replication of HSV-1.\u00a0 From this we hope to develop a botanical formulation which could target the virus at multiple steps during the replication process and be used therapeutically to reduce the symptoms associated with this disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regulation of CYP450 by Kava Extracts and Kavalactones: Unraveling the Potential Hepatic Risks<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Presented by: Tyler Daniels, MS<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Senior Scientist, Thorne HealthTech<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Summary:\u00a0<\/strong> Historically, kava (<em>Piper methysticum<\/em>) has been consumed throughout the Pacific Ocean cultures of Polynesia.
