Top 10 Reasons Why Fleets Choose the Phillips Connect Platform

In commercial trucking, efficiency depends on visibility. Fleets can’t afford downtime, wasted miles, or preventable breakdowns, and yet what’s going on inside trailers is often a blind spot. Trailers are treated as passive boxes on wheels instead of critical, data-rich equipment.

Connect1 from Phillips Connect is a fleet telematics/fleet management platform designed specifically for smart trailers. It unifies health, safety, and location data into one dashboard, helping fleets lower costs, improve trailer utilization, reduce risk, and extend asset life. By organizing trailer data into actionable insights, Connect1 turns blind spots into opportunities.

Connect1 consolidates data from Phillips Connect sensors, gateways, and telematics devices into one easy-to-use system, giving fleets a single source of truth for trailer location, tire pressure (TPMS), brakes, cargo status, doors, lights, and more.

1.Real-Time Trailer Tracking and Visibility Fleets can monitor trailer location and health in real time. No more switching between apps or spreadsheets. With Connect1, you know where trailers are, their load status, and whether they are ready to roll.

2. Proactive Alerts and Notifications Custom alerts notify fleets about problems such as low tire pressure, brake wear, or unauthorized trailer movement. Acting on issues early prevents breakdowns and improves safety.

3. Predictive and Scheduled Maintenance With mileage-based and time-based scheduling, fleets can plan service before failures occur. Predictive diagnostics identify patterns that point to future problems. This helps reduce downtime and extend asset life.

4. Trailer Utilization and Efficiency Connect1 highlights which trailers are underused, sitting idle, or delayed at yards. Fleets can redeploy equipment quickly to maximize efficiency and cut costs.

Fleet Analytics and Reporting

The platform includes advanced analytics, historical reporting, and trend insights. Maintenance managers and executives can use data to guide better decisions, from shop planning to capital investment.

5. Integration With Existing Fleet Systems Connect1 works alongside popular telematics, routing, and TMS platforms. Its open, sensor-agnostic design means fleets can connect the tools they already use without being locked into one system.

6. Driver-Focused Trailer Data Through DriverAssist integration, drivers receive in-cab trailer health insights such as tire status or pairing confirmation. This reduces risk on the road and supports safer operations.

7. Reduced Downtime and Cost Savings By streamlining maintenance and catching problems early, Connect1 reduces unplanned downtime. Fleets save money by keeping trailers road ready and minimizing costly service interruptions.

8. Cargo Security and Theft Prevention Geofence alerts and live GPS tracking improve trailer security. Door and cargo sensors provide real-time information about potential tampering or theft.

9. Scalable and Customizable Platform Connect1 dashboards can be tailored to fleet priorities. Because the system is built to scale, fleets of any size can expand without replacing existing hardware.

10. Data Security Standards  Phillips Connect is ISO 27001 certified, meeting global standards for protecting sensitive data. Fleets can be confident that their operational information is secure.

For fleets that want to improve uptime, reduce maintenance costs, and maximize trailer efficiency, Connect1 delivers. By turning raw sensor data into actionable insights, the platform helps fleets transform operations and compete at a higher level.

Connect1 is how Phillips Connect turns the lights on for your trailers.

You Can’t Manage What You Can’t See: Why Smart Trailer Visibility Is a Risk Management Imperative

In fleet operations, risk is always present, but how you manage it makes all the difference. Whether it’s a tire blowout on the highway, undetected brake wear, cargo shifting in transit, or undetected break-ins in the yard, these aren’t minor setbacks. They’re serious operational risks that can result in crashes, insurance claims, regulatory violations, lost loads, and lost business.

Too often, the trailer is the most under-monitored, under-managed, and overlooked part of the vehicle, even though it’s where a significant amount risk originates – just ask anyone who’s ever backed a tractor trailer into a loading dock. For fleets still relying solely on in-cab telematics, the reality is stark: without insight into your trailers, you’re managing risk with incomplete information.

It’s time to close that gap. Smart trailer technology is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s a have-to-have.

Whether your trailers are moving or waiting to move, you need to know what’s happening, preferably in real time. Phillips Connect delivers a comprehensive set of smart trailer solutions that give fleets real-time visibility into critical performance and safety data. With sensors, cameras, and system-wide integration, Phillips Connect helps fleets monitor brakes, tires, lights, doors, cargo, and more – often before issues turn into breakdowns or claims.

And unlike other solutions, Phillips Connect is designed to integrate seamlessly with the in-cab systems you might already be using. That means no rip-and-replace. Just smarter, safer trailers right out of the gate.

Two key ways to reduce risk before it starts:

  1. Tire Pressure and Brake Monitoring

According to industry data, more than 50% of roadside breakdowns are tire related. Combine that with the risk of brake fade or failure, and it’s clear that under-monitoring these systems can be both dangerous and costly.

Phillips Connect’s TPMS and brake monitoring solutions keep you ahead of these risks. By continuously tracking tire inflation from the regulator to each tire, fleets can reduce premature wear, extend tire life, lower the risk of blowouts, and maintain braking efficiency. The result is fewer CSA violations, improved fuel efficiency, shorter stopping distances, and safer roads for everyone.

  1. Cargo Awareness and Security

Whether your trailer is in motion, parked at a dock, or sitting in a lot overnight, what’s happening inside shouldn’t be a mystery.

In 2024 alone, North America saw a record 3,625 cargo thefts, representing a 27% spike year-over-year, resulting in nearly $455 million in losses. With an average stolen shipment valued at over $200,000 and thefts happening six times daily, the vulnerability is undeniable.

With Phillips Connect’s CargoVision and door monitoring technologies, our customers gain visibility into every inch of trailer space. Motion-triggered imaging captures near‑real‑time visuals when doors open or cargo shifts, which is critical intelligence that helps detect theft attempts, verify loading and detention practices, and ensure safe, efficient use of space.

These technologies aren’t just about oversight. They serve as a deterring layer of protection. Given that identity‑based thefts alone now represent nearly one‑third of all incidents, real-time monitoring is essential for accountability, liability defense, and operational integrity.

The Bottom Line: Risk Doesn’t Wait

If you think you’re managing trailer risk without visibility, it’s time to think again. Fleet management software and telematics are table stakes for every fleet-based business these days, and now trailer intelligence is the next frontier. The cost of being reactive and continuing to ignore the risks is simply too high.

Phillips Connect helps fleets shift from reactive to proactive. From guessing to knowing. From exposing your business to risk to building a safer, smarter operation that protects your people, your loads, the community around you, and your bottom line.

It’s time to turn on the lights.

Free Today, Regret Tomorrow: The Risk Behind No-Cost Installs

If there’s one thing every fleet operator learns quickly, it’s that “free” usually comes with strings attached.

In the race to win business, some smart trailer tech providers have started offering free hardware installations – touting it as a way to help fleets save money. And on the surface, it can sound appealing. But seasoned industry pros know the truth: when something’s free upfront, the real cost often shows up later in poor performance, unreliable data, or long-term lock-in.

At Phillips Connect, we take a different route. We don’t rely on gimmicks or bury costs behind clever marketing. We focus on delivering dependable, high-performance technology that pays for itself through uptime, accuracy, and long-term value. Because in this business, what starts out free often becomes the most expensive line on your balance sheet.

When a vendor offers a free hardware or lighting installations, ask yourself:

  • How are they making up for that lost revenue?
  • Are they using certified technicians?
  • Are they following OEM wiring standards?
  • What happens when something fails?

Here’s what we’ve seen, and what many fleet managers are starting to learn the hard way:

  • Non-standard wiring, like splicing into harnesses, may get the install done more quickly and less expensively, but it can void your OEM warranties and create electrical gremlins that chase you for years.
  • Free labor isn’t always skilled labor. Untrained or rushed installers often skip steps, misroute cables, or leave systems half-calibrated. This results in out-of-service trailers, expensive service calls, danger to your loads, drivers and the public at large, and oftentimes angry drivers stuck with equipment they can’t trust.
  • Shortcuts today equal delays tomorrow. Free installs often lead to longer downtimes later due to troubleshooting preventable issues, ultimately costing you in both time and operational efficiency.

Phillips Connect is proud to be the premium option. We invest in:

  • Certified professional installations
  • OEM-compliant wiring practices
  • Tested, integrated systems that work as promised the first time

And we do it all with the backing of Phillips, a name fleets have trusted for nearly a century for rugged, reliable, road-tested solutions.

With our smart trailer solutions, including cameras, sensors, tire pressure systems, brake diagnostics, cargo monitoring, and more, we’re turning trailers from dark boxes into real-time data hubs.

That’s only valuable if the technology works, and it only works if it’s installed correctly.

If I have one final thought for you, it’s to ask the right questions:

  • Who’s doing the work?
  • How are they wiring into my system?
  • Will this void my OEM warranties?
  • What’s the track record on system reliability post-install?

Because when it comes to smart trailers, you’re not just buying hardware. You’re buying uptime, data integrity, and peace of mind.

At Phillips Connect, we charge for installation because we do it right. And when your trailers are rolling, your data’s flowing, and your drivers trust their equipment — that’s an investment that pays off every mile.

Phillips Connect Introduces Smart Nosebox GPS Gateways at TMC ’22 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition

ORLANDO, FL (March 6, 2022) – Phillips Connect introduced three new Smart nosebox GPS gateways during a press conference held today in conjunction with the TMC ’22 Annual Meeting and Transportation Technology Exhibition. Easily retrofittable or specified on new equipment, the new Phillips Connect Smart noseboxes transform trailers into managed assets that provide telematics benefits with a positive ROI.

The Smart S7™ Swiveling Nosebox, Smart Q-Box™, and Smart iBox™ are advanced cellular gateways, GPS trackers, and sensor hubs that deliver total awareness of trailer location, status, and critical trailer conditions to the cloud. All are equipped with a Phillips Quick-Change-Socket (QCS2) Sta-Dry™ 7-way connection requiring no additional harnessing or electrical connections.

Integrated sensors include GPS location, tractor power, and ABS PLC data such as VIN, fault lamp status, and trouble codes.  Additionally, data from a wide variety of external sensors are available through Bluetooth LE, GPIO, and an extendable RS485-based Phillips Connect PCT Bus.

The Smart S7 swiveling nosebox offers additional cost benefits to fleets.  The swivel feature, developed by Phillips Industries a decade ago, allows cables to simply follow the movement of the truck when the truck/trailer combination has to maneuver into tight spaces, creating a severe angle between them.  This situation can result in expensive and time-consuming damage to the trailer-side connections.  The Smart S7 swiveling nosebox accommodates a turn up to 80 degrees (40 degrees left or 40 degrees right) and will automatically disconnect the electrical connection if the turn exceeds that angle.

Rob Phillips, CEO of Phillips Industries and Phillips Connect commented on the evolution of the new noseboxes. “By tapping into the long history of Phillips Industries’ solutions-based product development, Phillips Connect can now offer our current and new customers smart telematics-equipped noseboxes from a trusted source. The industry knows and has confidence in the Phillips name and we’re taking advantage of our history plus the exceptional team we’ve put together at Phillips Connect to deliver real, quantifiable change.”

The new gateway devices introduced at TMC operate on the Connect1™ platform, which gives fleets advanced management of their operations by providing complete fleet analytics through personalized dashboards.  By fully customizing the Connect1 dashboards, fleets can see the real-time status of an entire operation through custom notifications, geofences, reports, and more. With this information, fleets can take proactive action that can save time, money, and lives on the road.

Utility Trailer Connect Launches Advanced Trailer Telematics Platform

ORLANDO, FL (March 6, 2022) – Utility Trailer Connect is pleased to announce the launch of its advanced trailer telematics platform.

This new system stems from Utility’s proprietary wiring harness that has been reengineered to work with the Phillips Connect Smart7™ nosebox. Utility recognized early on the advantages of providing the highest quality, corrosion-free harnesses that would seamlessly and reliably connect to multiple sensors for the life of the trailer. Because Phillips Industries is the standard wiring harness supplier for Utility Trailer, upgrading to the telematics version of its existing harness can be done without slowing the trailer production rates. All connections of the Utility harness are soldered, and connections are over-molded.

Utility Trailer with Phillips Connect Smart7™

This collaborative product suite at launch will include GPS trailer tracking, light-out detection, intelligent ABS fault code reporting, tire inflation system monitoring, and the ability to connect to additional sensors (sold separately) including door open/closed, ultrasonic cargo detection, and interior cargo cameras, among others. It also has built-in expansion capabilities, offering over-the-air communication updates that will integrate with advanced tire pressure monitoring systems and Bendix’s Roll-Stability system, trailer weight, air tank pressure, and optional brake pad wear-sensors for disc brakes. Future systems will include connection to reefer units and liftgates for monitoring status and maintenance.

“I really appreciate the way that Utility worked with our team to develop its joint smart-trailer solution. Rather than focusing on being first to market, we put our technical resources together to develop the most reliable, fully integrated, and easiest-to-install system available,” said Rob Phillips, founder and CEO of Phillips Connect. “Quality and reliability were always paramount to everything else, and they never compromised. This platform is a true game-changer for its premium fleet customers.”

“Our team also worked with Utility and our mutual customer, Hirschbach for Utility’s first large-scale installation of the Smart7™ system,” he said. “Hirschbach now has more than 1,200 Utility refrigerated trailers in operation with the Smart7 telematics, and has placed an additional order for Utility refrigerated trailers to be delivered in 2022.”

The Connect1 online or mobile platform is incredibly powerful, yet intuitive, and displays all the critical alerts for a trailer on just one screen. It even makes it easy for fleets with multiple telematics solutions to get to the right provider’s platform with a few keystrokes and a single click.

“Phillips has been an excellent partner to Utility and its dealer network for the last 40 years,” said Steve Bennett, VP of Utility. “This new platform’s components, such as the Smart7 nosebox, wire harness, and accessory items such as door sensors and cargo sensors are available at Utility Trailer Dealers throughout North America.”
